Corporate social responsibility
Taking responsibility and offering support
Acting responsibly and being a good corporate citizen is about more than mission statements and strategy meetings. It is about how we behave as an organisation, how we treat each other as colleagues, how we engage with suppliers, how we help fuel the ambitions of our customers and assist them through difficult times. It is about the wider role we play in the global community.
CSR programmes
Through our flagship programmes – Santander Universities, Santander Foundation and Santander Breakthrough – we aim to make a positive contribution, with initiatives that educate and that support enterprise and employment.
Santander Universities
At Santander we have a deeply held belief in investing in higher education and research. Through scholarships, grants and support for special projects, we have supported students and formed links with the university community worldwide.
Santander Foundation
The Santander Foundation provided £5.4 million in grants to 3,263 UK registered charities in 2016 for projects that help disadvantaged people.
Santander Breakthrough
We launched the Breakthrough programme in 2011 to help fast-growing small and medium-sized businesses. We want to help them thrive, contribute to economic growth and recovery and participate in their local economies by providing employment and trade. Breakthrough supports qualifying businesses with funding, internships, mentoring and international trade missions.
Santander MoneyWise
We help adults and young people develop their financial capabilities, assisting the Personal Finance Education Group supporting secondary schools in delivering financial education, and funding The Money Charity Money manual for university students.
Santander WorkWise
We are keen to support skills, training and job opportunities, particularly for young people, and our partnerships with Career Academies and The Prince’s Trust provide funding for practical employability programmes for 16-24 year olds. Our work schemes include ‘Flying Start’ and Apprenticeships aimed at allowing school leavers to join the bank in a full time role and study to gain qualifications. We also run a graduate programme, offer summer internships and provide paid work experience to help support young people into work.
Our CSR committee, led by CEO Ana Botín, is the focus for all our CSR strategies, through which we aim to play a wider role and contribute to the communities in which we operate.
